$175 Million Verdict in Roundup Cancer Trial

$175 Million Verdict in Roundup Cancer Trial

After a string of losses for plaintiffs, a Philadelphia jury recently delivered a $175 million Roundup cancer verdict against the global chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer. This case involved a retired restaurant owner, Ernest Caranci, who claimed that his cancer was a result of prolonged exposure to Bayer’s Roundup weed killer.

Background on Roundup Lawsuits

The Roundup controversy has only continued to expand over the last few years. Roundup is a well-known weed killer that combats unwanted plant growth, thus helping gardeners and homeowners maintain their lawns and gardens.

However, individuals who believe that exposure to Roundup leads to cancer have taken legal action against Bayer and Monsanto. Several Roundup cases have already gone through trial, resulting in various verdicts. Some verdicts have favored the plaintiffs, holding Bayer responsible for the harm allegedly caused, while others have sided with the company. The varying outcomes have fueled a growing debate about the safety of Roundup.

Bayer has consistently maintained that Roundup and its key ingredient, glyphosate, are safe for human use. However, several studies point to a potential link between the product and cancer.

Trial Ends in $175 Million Roundup Cancer Verdict

Ernest Caranci filed a Roundup lawsuit, claiming that his diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a direct result of his long-term use of the weed killer in his garden.

On October 27, 2023, a Philadelphia jury awarded Caranci a $175 million Roundup cancer verdict. The jury’s verdict in the Roundup case includes compensatory and punitive damages. The $25 million in compensatory damages are meant to compensate Mr. Caranci for his suffering and medical expenses. Additionally, the jury imposed punitive damages in the form of $150 million on Bayer. Punitive damages act as a deterrent and send a message that such actions will not be tolerated. In total, the Roundup cancer verdict demands that Bayer pay $175 million.

Bayer disagrees with the verdict, believing the decision is unfounded and excessive. As a result, Bayer plans to appeal the verdict.

Future of Roundup Lawsuits

Bayer’s legal history with Roundup includes significant settlements in 2020, totaling up to $10.9 billion. The recent $175 million Roundup cancer verdict against Bayer, coupled with the previous $1.25 million verdict, may set a precedent for the 40,000 Roundup lawsuits still pending.
