Copiktra Risks for Cancer Patients

Copiktra Risks for Cancer Patients

Cancer is a ravenous disease that claims the lives of countless people every year. The CDC revealed that cancer was the second leading cause of death in the United States in 2020. There are many different types of cancer, and it can occur nearly anywhere in the body. Cancer patients undergo surgeries, transplants, chemotherapy, and other treatments to fight the disease. If one treatment fails, the patient may resort to another.

Scientists constantly work to create new cancer treatments. Researchers test these treatments to ensure they are not only safe but effective. Sometimes treatments prove more harmful than helpful. On June 30, 2022, the FDA warned that the cancer drug, Copiktra, may lead to death or adverse side effects.

What is Copiktra?

Copiktra (duvelisib) is a cancer medication used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). CLL affects blood and bone marrow and produces damaged white blood cells. SLL is like CLL, but it starts in lymph nodes.

Taken as a capsule, Copiktra blocks key signals that cause cancer cells to multiply. This action may help to reduce cancer growth. Medical professionals prescribe Copiktra only after two other cancer treatments failed or stopped working. Despite limited long-term clinical trial info, the FDA approved Copiktra in 2018.

FDA Findings on Copiktra

Copiktra manufacturer Secura Bio recently submitted five-year survival results from clinical trials to the FDA. These trials studied 319 Copiktra patients. The results showed a higher risk of death with Copiktra compared to other cancer drugs. Copiktra patients were also more likely to suffer serious side effects. Side effects experienced by Copiktra patients include:

  • Death
  • Infections
  • Diarrhea
  • Intestinal inflammation
  • Lung inflammation
  • Skin reactions
  • Elevated liver enzymes

At this time, the FDA cannot advise patients how likely they are to experience these symptoms. The agency plans to hold future meetings on whether doctors should still prescribe Copiktra.
