Just for Men Hair Dye Injuries

One of the main ingredients in Just for Men hair dye is p-Phenylenediamine, or PPD, a chemical substance commonly used in hair coloring products. Sensitivity to PPD can cause burning and stinging. The American Contact Dermatitis Society declared PPD allergen of the year in 2006. Although the United States and EU have not banned PPD in hair dyes, many European countries previously banned the chemical. For example, Germany, France, and Sweden all prohibited PPD for decades until these countries joined the EU. It is estimated that roughly 5-7% of Just for Men consumers are allergic to PPD. When men use Just for Men hair dye they may experience an allergic reaction which can result in more severe symptoms such as:

  • Anaphylactic shock
  • Blisters
  • Severe burning on the neck and scalp
  • Swelling
  • Scarring
  • Skin discoloration

Combe Incorporated has never recalled Just for Men hair dye despite reports of serious injuries associated with reactions to PPD. According to the National Institutes of Health, in general, reports of allergic reactions to hair dyes are increasing.
