Roundup is an herbicide created by the agrochemical company Monsanto in the 1970s. The prevalent weedkiller contains the active ingredient glyphosate, a non-selective herbicide that kills most plants. Originally, agricultural workers primarily used Roundup in large-scale farming, but today Roundup is available to the average person for home and garden use. The World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen after concluding the chemical caused cancer in lab test animals. Research from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer indicates that glyphosate causes genetic damage in human cells, and these mutations may later develop into cancerous cells. Additionally, various studies have found that Roundup poses an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that originates in white blood cells in the immune system.
In 2019, the journal Mutation Research/Reviews in Mutation Research published a meta-analysis focusing on the groups most exposed to Roundup. The researchers identified a strong correlation between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. According to the study, exposure to glyphosate increased the risk of developing cancer by a staggering 41%.
Despite multiple studies supporting the relationship between glyphosate and cancer, the EPA has reiterated that glyphosate is not carcinogenic. However, the EPA recently withdrew its 2020 risk assessment in which the agency determined glyphosate is an unlikely human carcinogen. After the EPA released its official decision on the status of glyphosate, it received immense pushback from several advocacy groups. An appellate court required the EPA to update its risk assessment by October 1, 2022, but the EPA stated it could not meet this deadline.
