Worldwide, farmers rely on a popular herbicide known as glyphosate to control weeds and obtain a healthy crop harvest. Glyphosate is the main active ingredient in the widely-available brand-name weedkiller, Roundup. In the United States alone, farmers apply a whopping 300 million pounds of glyphosate annually. But, commercial farmers are not the only ones who use glyphosate-based products like Roundup. Average citizens also use Roundup to eliminate pesky weeds in their cherished home gardens. However, research suggests prolonged exposure to glyphosate may result in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers. Did you suffer serious injuries after using the herbicide Roundup? Reach out today to speak with a Roundup lawyer about how a lawsuit may benefit you.
Our law firm is currently handling lawsuits on behalf of individuals exposed to Roundup, an herbicide manufactured by Monsanto. Individuals have teamed up with Roundup lawyers to file claims that exposure to Roundup caused them to develop various forms of cancer. Furthermore, lawsuits allege that Monsanto failed to update its labeling or formula to safeguard users from the hazardous effects of the weedkiller. Roundup is an herbicide created by the agrochemical company Monsanto in the 1970s. The prevalent weedkiller contains the active ingredient glyphosate, a non-selective herbicide that kills most plants. Originally, agricultural workers primarily used Roundup in large-scale farming, but today Roundup is available to the average person for home and garden use. More than 250 million pounds of Roundup are sprayed on lawns, gardens, and playgrounds. In 1996, Monsanto introduced “Roundup Ready” crops that were immune to glyphosate. Therefore, farmers could spray Roundup freely since it would only kill the weeds, not the crops. As a result of this innovation, farmers tripled their use of glyphosate.
The World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen after concluding the chemical caused cancer in lab test animals. Research from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer indicates that glyphosate causes genetic damage in human cells, and these mutations may later develop into cancerous cells. Additionally, various studies have found that Roundup poses an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that originates in white blood cells in the immune system.
In 2019, the journal Mutation Research/Reviews in Mutation Research published a meta-analysis focusing on the groups most exposed to Roundup. The researchers identified a strong correlation between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. According to the study, exposure to glyphosate increased the risk of developing cancer by a staggering 41%.
Despite multiple studies supporting the relationship between glyphosate and cancer, the EPA has reiterated that glyphosate is not carcinogenic. However, the EPA recently withdrew its 2020 risk assessment in which the agency determined glyphosate is an unlikely human carcinogen. After the EPA released its official decision on the status of glyphosate, it received immense pushback from several advocacy groups. An appellate court required the EPA to update its risk assessment by October 1, 2022, but the EPA stated it could not meet this deadline. The agency withdrew its assessment, and Roundup’s next registration review is expected in 2026.
Farmers, landscapers, and non-agricultural workers claim they developed severe medical conditions because of Roundup. An FDA study found that 60% of soybeans and corn contained traces of glyphosate. These days, it is difficult to avoid Roundup since it is the most widely used weedkiller. Researchers have also detected glyphosate in surface waters and groundwater, and the federal Safe Drinking Water Act lists glyphosate as a primary drinking water contaminant. Exposure can occur through multiple avenues, like direct contact, inhalation, or ingestion. Roundup may cause:

Monsanto originally invented Roundup. In 2018, Bayer, a German pharmaceutical and biotechnology company, acquired Monsanto.
Farmworkers, landscapers, and groundskeepers are the most susceptible to the risks of exposure to Roundup. However, given the prevalence of the weed killer, ordinary people are also vulnerable. Thousands of people have worked with Roundup lawyers to file claims nationwide. There are approximately 26,000 Roundup lawsuits filed in state courts and over 4,000 cases in federal court. In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Bayer’s request to dismiss claims that Roundup causes cancer.
While Monsanto/Bayer reached an $11 billion settlement, which accounted for nearly 75% of the 125,000 lawsuits, many Roundup lawsuits are still pending.
Previous trials have awarded large Roundup verdicts to plaintiffs, including:
Additionally, the judge overseeing the MDL approved a $45 million settlement in a class action lawsuit regarding false advertising claims against Monsanto. However, this Roundup settlement solely focuses on claims that Monsanto did not disclose that glyphosate exposure could potentially result in cancer and other ailments. Plaintiffs in this class action lawsuit do not allege to have developed an illness.
Roundup is still on the market, but glyphosate is being phased out as the main ingredient. Although Monsanto/Bayer adamantly claims that Roundup does not cause cancer, the company said that in 2023 it will no longer sell glyphosate products to home gardeners. The company will replace glyphosate with new active ingredients approved by the EPA. According to Bayer, this decision intends to mitigate future lawsuits but claims that this transition does not change its stance on Roundup safety. Yet, thousands of lawsuits disagree with the herbicide company’s assertion. Claimants allege that Monsanto knew that Roundup contained carcinogenic chemicals like glyphosate but continued to market and manufacture the weedkiller with the same formula.
