Their website guarantees meals that are quick and rich in nutrients. Chicago boasts a Daily Harvest retail location, while most sales are online.
Recently, the safety of Daily Harvest products has come into question. Over the years, social media influencers have praised Daily Harvest for its nutritious options. Viral stars even received PR packages from Daily Harvest to promote their products.
But, in June 2022, people took to social media to share their Daily Harvest horror stories. After eating Daily Harvest foods, people complained of stomach problems, fever, and nausea. Most of these claims centered on the French Lentil + Leek Crumbles. Others wrote that they were hospitalized after consuming the toppings. Daily Harvest reminded customers to cook the topping to a temperature of 165°F to avoid food poisoning.
Customers then received emails to throw out the French Lentil + Leek Crumbles and an offer for a $10 store credit. Patrons viewed this response as insensitive, considering the severe reactions many people experienced.
On June 23, 2022, Daily Harvest recalled all French Lentil + Leek Crumbles. Daily Harvest revealed it knew of over 470 illnesses linked to the crunchy toppings. The FDA reports that Daily Harvest distributed over 28,000 units of the recalled product in the United States from April 28 to June 17, 2022. The recall urged customers with the product to immediately dispose of the topping. The product comes in a white 12-ounce package with the words “CRUMBLES” and “French Lentil + Leek” written on it.
In a statement shortly after the recall, the company said it has not yet identified the root cause of the problems linked to the French Lentil + Leek Crumbles. The product tested negative for common foodborne pathogens and major allergens. However, the company remains confident that the issues only apply to the recalled product and none of its other items.
Eventually, nearly a month after the recall, Daily Harvest announced that it had determined tara flour as the cause of the issue. The company had ruled out mycotoxins, several food-borne pathogens, and major allergens as contaminants responsible for the outbreak of illness. Finally, the investigation reached the conclusion that an ingredient known as tara flour resulted in consumers becoming sick. Tara flour served as a source of protein in the crumbles, but Daily Harvest stated that it would no longer source from the producer who provided the company with the tara flour, although Daily Harvest did not name the producer.
By late July 2022, the FDA revealed that it had received more than 325 consumer reports regarding Daily Harvest’s lentil crumble product. Furthermore, the agency reported that 113 patients have been hospitalized, and 25 patients have had their gallbladders removed.
The FDA sent out a safety notice to inform the public that the agency has received 389 reports in its consumer complaints systems as of September 15, 2022. This number later increased to 393 reports of injury, according to the FDA, with 133 hospitalizations. Furthermore, 25 victims have had their gallbladders removed due to consumption of the French Lentil + Leek Crumbles contaminated product. While the most recent illness onset was reported on September 4, the FDA is concerned that consumers still have the affected products in their freezers.
Those affected by the product demand justice after Daily Harvest’s poor response. Many people suffered painful and even life-threatening consequences after eating the crumbles. Also, those who visited the hospital now have high medical bills.
On June 26, 2022, a woman named Carol Ann Ready filed a lawsuit against Daily Harvest. Ready claims she ate the product twice in May and experienced extreme pain. In late May, she was hospitalized with elevated liver enzymes and gallbladder dysfunction. On June 24, 2022, doctors removed her gallbladder.
Additionally, in July 2022, a father named John Looby filed a lawsuit against Daily Harvest on behalf of his infant daughter. The wife, Katherine Looby, consumed Daily Harvest’s French Lentil + Leek, subsequently grew ill, and required hospitalization. The mother continued to breastfeed at the recommendation of physicians, but soon the infant daughter experienced abdominal pain, headache, gastrointestinal distress, fever, and vomiting. Looby argues that his daughter contracted the gastrointestinal illness caused by Daily Harvest’s crumbles through breastfeeding.
