Zimmer Biomet Shoulder Replacement Lawyer

An injured shoulder severely limits a person’s range of motion. Even simple tasks like brushing teeth, throwing a ball, or reaching for an item become challenging with a damaged shoulder. Many people undergo shoulder replacement surgery to restore arm movement. Sometimes doctors recommend reverse shoulder replacement surgery, depending on the patient’s condition. This surgery reverses the natural position of the shoulder joint. A reverse shoulder implant can significantly improve a patient’s shoulder. But Zimmer Biomet Reverse Shoulder Replacement devices may cause serious injury.

Our law firm is currently handling cases on behalf of individuals injured by Zimmer Biomet Reverse Shoulder Replacement devices.

Zimmer Biomet Reverse Shoulder Replacement Devices

The medical device company Zimmer Biomet offers a variety of shoulder replacement systems. The company designs fracture shoulder devices, revision shoulder devices, and reverse shoulder devices. On its website, Zimmer Biomet claims its products can restore shoulder function and help return patients to normalcy. One such device, the Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder System Humeral Tray Model 115340, aimed to restore arm movement in patients with rotator cuff tears. People with rotator cuff tears can develop shoulder arthritis. Tissue affected by shoulder arthritis cannot return to its normal condition. Therefore, surgeons use the reverse shoulder system in surgery to help the patient.

Zimmer Biomet Reverse Shoulder Replacement Recall

In December 2016, Zimmer Biomet recalled its Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder System. The company issued the recall after reports of the humeral tray fracturing in the device. Patients with a fractured rever shoulder implant must have reversion surgery to correct it. The recall applied to 3,662 devices manufactured between 2008 and 2015.

Zimmer Biomet recalled three other reverse shoulder devices in 2015 and 2017.

Zimmer Biomet Reverse Shoulder Replacement Injuries

The FDA identified the Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder System Humeral Tray as a Class I recall. Class I is the FDA’s most severe category. According to the FDA, these devices have a higher likelihood of causing adverse health effects or death. Patients with a fractured reverse shoulder implant may suffer:

  • Revision surgery
  • Permanent loss of shoulder function
  • Infection
  • Death

Zimmer Biomet Reverse Shoulder Replacement Lawsuits

Lawsuits against Zimmer Biomet claim the company designed defective and dangerous devices. Only a month before the 2016 recall, the FDA criticized Zimmer Biomet for several potential violations. FDA inspectors said the company lacked procedures for:

  • Controlling product design
  • Performing corrective and preventative actions
  • Formally reviewing and evaluating product complaints
  • Verifying inspection and testing results

In 2016, a man settled his Zimmer Biomet Shoulder Replacement lawsuit for $350,000. The claimant required two revision surgeries after the humeral trays were separated from the stem.
